Newsletter for the Educationagenda NS-Injustice of the EVZ Foundation |
Dear Readers, |
"To remember is to act", we were told by the Holocaust survivor Esther Bejarano, who died in 2021. This is also the credo of the EVZ Foundation. The Education Agenda NS-Injustice which was launched last week with the Federal Ministry of Finance will awaken society by addressing the crimes of the National Socialist regime and makes for a strong and united society now. The commitment to a society worth living in is not oriented only to a younger generation: We can contribute to this at every age and every phase of life. With innovative as well as immersive approaches, the 17 pilot projects of the Education Agenda NS-Injustice open up new ways of remembrance – and therefore new ways of acting. We will tell you about it in this and in subsequent newsletters – join us and get involved. Dr. Andrea Despot Chief Executive Officer of the EVZ Foundation

The discussion took place during the presentation of the project on January 25 in the conference center of the Federal Press Conference. The Federal Ministry of Finance and the EVZ Foundation issued an invitation to the press meeting. The panel discussed the selected 17 projects in light of the MEMO youth study. Historical-political education still has a way to go, says the Tagesspiegel. Young people in particular need to be made more aware of the issue of historical revisionist narratives. Projects of the Education Agenda for historical awareness and living memory will help to achieve this. |

Remembering as Working on the Present |
For the first time, a cultural institution is engaging in a critical examination of its own historical involvements with remembering as working on the present: 200 biographies of deprived, persecuted and murdered employees of the Munich Kammerspiele during the time of National Socialism are made available in a digital archive and a series of podcasts. The Chair of the Board of Trustees, Annette Schavan, spoke with the BR in the context of a feature about opportunities for artistic approaches to educational work with young people. |

What makes your project special or different from other projects concerning learning about the past?
Our project on "Who Were the Victims of the National Socialists?" will deliver a youth-empowered place-based learning Toolkit that challenges students to undertake their own history project in answering this question. What is unique about this project concerning learning about the past, is that students will be in charge of their own learning journey. They get to choose how to learn about the past and how to research this question. The teacher, is merely a facilitator in the process. The Toolkit will encourage students to think about what they would like to learn, what they would like to know about this topic and how they would like to find out. The Toolkit will consist of a larger competency-based framework that will allow both students and teachers to follow and assess the development of core democratic awareness, skills and competences, also by challenging students to think and reflect about social injustice in present-day societies.
