News from the Education Agenda NS-Injustice and the projects. |
Dear Readers, |
The war in Ukraine has a major impact on all of us: Every day, new pictures and reports show how difficult the situation on the ground really is, as well as the immeasurable suffering of the people in the country. At the same time, the reports show that Europe-wide cooperation in humanitarian work as well as in historical-political education is more important now than ever. Our transnational projects from the Europe cluster of the Education Agenda NS-Injustice are also relevant to the current situation: The Ukrainian partners involved in the project "Who were the victims of the National Socialists?" are currently finding continuation impossible for very understandable reasons. For the project "Uprooted" , involving amongst others the educational center Tolerspace from Kyiv, the partners jointly carry out research on the forgotten fates of children in World War II and establish a connection to their rights today.
There are also major implications for other educational projects: Where are events and encounters possible at all? How can the affected participants be supported? The EVZ Foundation stands in support of the partnership projects in Ukraine at this difficult time.
Stay in touch, inform and engage with us.

The co-production with Teatro La Re-sentida from Santiago de Chile will celebrate its premiere at Schaubühne Berlin on April 1. Based on the "estallido social," the social uprising in which people poured through the streets of Santiago de Chile and filled Plaza Dignidad in October 2019, the director Marco Layera and the actors present a choreographic reflection on the nature of violence. The play will be performed on other days at the FIND Festival and on April 7 and 8 at the Munich Kammerspiele. |

Applications for three calls for applications are possible until June 23, 2022. |

Kick-Off for Untold Stories |
Telling the untold, making the unknown known: With this aspiration, Humanity in Action has launched the project "Untold Stories - Forgotten Places of Memory". The aim is to contribute to a diverse culture of remembrance in Europe by exploring lesser-known places and memories of National Socialist persecution – together with teachers and young Europeans. Now we had the official starting signal: On March 17, project partners as well as ten teachers met for the digital kick-off event. |

Racism in the context of policing and judicial work in the past and present |
"All foreigners are prohibited from entering this shelter!" - this police order once appeared on a placard in front of an air raid shelter in Münster. Today it is both a reminder and a testimony to the actions of the police and the judiciary during the time of National Socialism. The Villa ten Hompel, where these and other sources of information about police and judicial history are on display, is addressing employees from these key social positions with its Education Agenda project "Das geht mich ja was an!" [This concerns me!] funded by the EVZ Foundation. Seminars provide police officers and lawyers with perspectives on the role of their profession during the time of National Socialism, and inform them about breaks and continuities in thinking and acting from the National Socialist era to the present. |

Four project sponsors, four federal states, four educational approaches, one goal: To provide key players in society with knowledge and skills that are relevant now concerning NS injustice in matters of training for qualifications. The projects in the Transfer Cluster will have started their work by the end of 2021.
On March 3, the first network meeting took place with employees of Villa ten Hompel, the Anne Frank Educational Centre, European Janusz Korczak Academy and the Lower Saxony Memorials Foundation. The aim was to provide valuable impetus for individual projects through collegial consultation as well as the exchange of best practices. The idea has been successful: The project sponsors took the opportunity to network with each other, to identify common challenges in project implementation and to talk about solutions.
In the future too, we intend to support networking among project sponsors. And this will apply across the different clusters: In late summer, the EVZ Foundation invites all funded projects of the NS Injustice Education Agenda to find inspiration in diverse approaches. |

Project on forced labor in Leipzig – getting the felt sense of history with the app and interaction |
The "Mirror // Mirror" project comes at just the right time, says MDR: It deals with aspects of the history of NS injustice; it focuses especially on the issue of forced labor, and at the same time highlights current forms of right-wing radicalization. |

"stolpern" [stumbling] - in the Schaubühne |
Journalist Marion Brasch talks about the project "stolpern": In the play, young people from Cottbus talk about their experiences of degradation, discrimination and racism. They have written texts about their paths through Cottbus, going past "stumbling stones" as well as the stories behind them. |

Das geht mich ja was an! [This concerns me!] |
The surprised statement of a policewoman at the theme day "Police History" directly made Villa ten Hompel the title of its next project: "This matters to me!" – quite "contrary to expectations that history would actually be talked about purely at the historical site," as the Münstersche Zeitung says. In its March 11 issue, it presented what's behind the project and the thoughts behind it. |

How has the self-perception of the Munich Kammerspiele changed since the fates of employees who suffered persecution under National Socialism were explored? Since 2018, Janne and Klaus Weinzierl have been researching with me the FATES of people who worked at the Munich Kammerspiele and were persecuted, deprived or murdered from 1933 on. Since then, we have become aware of a whole range of well over 200 FATES. We currently publish a weekly podcast series on this research and we are working on a website that will provide online access to our research whilst also making it possible to have an actual experience of our very impactful research process. We will also inaugurate a commemorative sign at the entrance to our playhouse on April 7. A plaque commemorating 28 people who worked at the Kammerspiele, were murdered from 1933 onwards or who chose to flee towards their deaths. Such interventions in the architecture of the building alter the self-perception of the Munich Kammerspiele including, for example, the renaming of the second chamber as the Therese-Giehse-Halle. |

History as a Reason for War: Putin's Narrative of the "Denazification of Ukraine" |
There is a war underway in Europe. After eight years of armed conflict, Russia has been waging an open war of aggression against Ukraine since the end of February 2022. Alongside the acute humanitarian disaster in Ukraine and the existential repression of open civil society in Russia and Belarus, there is an additional threat – a massive and fundamental instrumentalization of history, the likes of which have not been witnessed since the end of World War II. A debate is needed that informs, classifies and also questions how future memory work and history policy can and should respond to this massive instrumentalization of history. In our new format "EVZ Conversations!", we talk to representatives from institutions of memory work, history policy and science every two weeks. |

"Antisemitismus? Gibt es bei uns nicht!"[Antisemitism? We don't have that here!] |

Antisemitism and other forms of group-focused misanthropy are increasing, and not just at anti-Covid-19 demonstrations. Antisemitic, antigypsy and racist activities and views don't stop at the workplace either. On the panel, educators on antisemitism-critical education and representatives from the world of work will be discussing strategies for combating antisemitism in their everyday work and reporting on the projects of the Education Agenda NS-Injustive. |
