News from the Education Agenda NS-Injustice and the projects. |
|
|
Dear readers, |
|
Please think about your work environment for a moment. What thoughts go through your mind when you hear this statement: "Antisemitism? We don't have that here!" Would you agree? Could this come from a colleague? Or do you instinctively want to follow with the question: "Are you quite sure about that?"
It is no coincidence that the EVZ Foundation has picked this statement in the context of Education Agenda NS-Injustice as the title of their panel discussion. Antisemitism, racism and antigypsyism are real problems in the sphere of work. They reveal themselves daily in remarks, value judgments and actions – consciously and unconsciously.
Our projects make a decisive effort to oppose these phenomena: This is done by the transfer of knowledge and intervention skills to/in the direction of specific professional groups or educational programs in cultural spaces. Specifically, this means: They conduct workshops and seminars for employees from administration, the police as well as the judiciary or bring our issues and concerns to the theater.

The first part of the theater project "MIRROR // MIRROR" premiered in May: an interactive format between theater and a simulation game by the artist collective VERAVOEGELIN, that transports its audience into the world of likes and follows, troll attacks and bot armies, and also explores why social networks all too often foster disinformation, conspiracy ideology and extremism. |

On June 14, the EVZ Foundation will be welcoming very special guests: Twenty fellows from Humanity in Action's European Fellowship program will come to the Foundation that day to learn more about the work. In addition to a discussion with the CEO, Dr. Andrea Despot, the program primarily includes an exchange about the impressions of the day and the role of memory work in the context of historical-political education: Prior to the visit, the fellows will visit three Holocaust memorials and thereby commemorate the victims of National Socialism. |

What motivates the descendants of those who suffered National Socialist persecution in their social commitment? What needs do they have to make an effective contribution to historical-political educational work? Which fields of action do they engage in, and how do they intend to have an impact as bearers of our culture of remembrance?
The participants, i.e. descendants as well as educational institutions and memorial sites working with descendants, approached these questions in the structured dialog co-creative workshop of the NS Injustice Education Agenda. Mapping of players, funding perspectives as well as the development of ideas were on the agenda on May 20. A meeting that above all made clear: Irrespective of family history or background, participants are united by a desire for participation, networking, and the need to relate as equals. A detailed review as well as a graphic recording will be available on the EVZ Foundation website from mid-June.

What do you think he is seeing there? At the workshop held by the European Academy Berlin, participants from Poland, France and Germany learned how to use a 360-degree camera, laptop and curiosity to create virtual spaces and unfold a world all their own before our eyes in this way. As part of the Onboarding Memories project, they will be enabled to embark on a historical search for traces on their own doorstep and then tell us their stories in the virtual space. |

Gertrud Heuft: The story of a Jewish domestic servant |
|
The starting point for Dr. Martin Rüther's article "Unsere liebe Gertrud [Our dear Gertrud]" in the specialist publication of the online platform museenkoeln is an exchange of letters between the Cologne Schöneberg family and their Jewish domestic servant. Since 1988 a research associate at the NS-Documentation Center of the City of Cologne, Rüther traces the little-known fate of Gertrud Heuft, who came to Cologne in the 1920s, based on the results of the project "Verschwundenes sichtbar machen [Bringing the past back to light]." |

Ms. Gryglewski, how would you complete the following sentence: "Right is,..."?
What is right is (or should be) what strengthens our democracy and promotes the equal coexistence of people in a diverse society. During National Socialism, neither was provided nor wanted. At that time, law was only supposed to serve the interests of the state or the National Socialist regime; it was always ideologically based and was written, exercised and interpreted with the aim of persecuting people defined as not belonging and, in particular, murdering Jews or Sinti and Roma. Based on the experience of that time, the state itself, with its governments, now attaches importance to supporting strategies to prevent such policies and to allow jurisprudence to be independent of political influence.
