Education Agenda Newsletter 09/2022: NS-Education on TikTok, Raising Awareness against Antisemitism, Networking- and Input-Meeting |
Dear Readers,
Felix Kolmer passed away on August 5 at the age of 100. The Holocaust survivor was a lifelong advocate of memory culture as well as dialog. We have lost a founding father and companion who, among other things, campaigned for payments to former NS forced laborers.
The "Luxembourg Agreement" also dealt with reparations. Do you know how it came about? 70 years ago, Israel and the Federal Republic of Germany negotiated material indemnity for National Socialist injustice. Despite massive protests in both countries, an agreement was signed in Luxembourg on September 10, 1952 which provided for payments, goods, and services with a value of DM 3.5 billion for Israel.
Two projects of the Education Agenda are addressing this chapter of German post-war history in a scientific and applied way: They shed light on how Germany copes with the consequences of the war and on the processes of social and political reappraisal of the genocides.
Theater projects with various youth ensembles, training projects for public administration that raise awareness of antisemitism as well as web portals that make Jewish life visible all adopt completely different approaches to a critical examination of National Socialist injustice: The pilot projects of the first funding phase of the NS Injustice Education Agenda are working! And they respond in many different ways to the challenges and needs of the current historical-political educational work.
All the more reason for us to look forward to the new projects in the second funding round, which has just started. Once again, they set new priorities and activate a living memory of National Socialist persecution and the reappraisal of it.
Stay in touch, inform and engage with us.

We also present the projects in the first funding phase of the NS Injustice Education Agenda in brief videos.

The project "Stark im Amt [Strong in Office]" supports public administration employees in this process with training and advice. The five steps described in the blog provide initial pointers on how public institutions as well as companies and businesses can proceed after a racist incident.

On #LastSeen search for traces with MrWissen2go
Mirko Drotschmann aka MrWissen2go is going with Henning Borggräfe, Head of Research at the Arolsen Archives, in search of clues relating to people persecuted under National Socialism. They are searching online and on site in Brandenburg an der Havel for information about people whose last sign of life was a photograph of their deportation. Who were these people? Where did they live? Where were they taken to?

80 years after the deportation of Jews from Münster: Identifying antisemitism today
July 31 was the 80th anniversary of the deportation of Jews in "Transport No. XI/1" from Münster and the Münsterland to the Theresienstadt concentration camp. Under the pretext of an "evacuation" to a "ghetto for the elderly", the mostly elderly Jews were deported from the Münster freight station in freight wagons. Only 11 of the 901 deported people survived the Theresienstadt ghetto, where the transport arrived on August 1, 1942. Today, some of them are commemorated by Stolperstein [stumbling stones] plaques in the city of Münster. The seminars in the project "Das geht mich ja was an! [This concerns me!]" for police and judiciary sharpen the view for contemporary forms and manifestations of antisemitism.

Workshops, talks & Barcamp: Project partners come together in Berlin
The networking and input meeting of all previously funded projects of the NS Injustice Education Agenda will take place on September 19 and 20, 2022. In Berlin-Mitte, far away from Zoom & Co, the project sponsors will have the opportunity to get to know each other across clusters and to exchange information relating to their projects.
Participants will enjoy a rich and varied program: From workshops on the themes of impact management, TikTok, and digital education work to a discussion with young people from the "stolpern [stumbling]" project and a Coffee & Finance talk with tips on researching funding and writing good funding applications – we've got something for everyone!
The Barcamp also gives project sponsors the opportunity to bring their own topics, discussion questions and expertise to the conference and to design sessions.

What are the young people in the picture looking for? For the "stolpern [stumbling]" theater education project by the Schaubühne Berlin and the Piccolo Theater Cottbus, young people researched the stories of the people behind the "Stolpersteine [stumbling stones]" in their home location and made them visible in a theater production. A great success: The play was invited to the 31ST national meeting "Jugendclubs an Theatern [Youth Clubs in Theater]" in Weimar!

Peter Römer, Geschichtsort Villa ten Hompel |
Mr. Römer, why could it be important for employees in the police and judiciary to look at the crimes of National Socialism?
There are substantial continuities in the exercise of state professions. Police officers and lawyers, for example, have the same role across all state systems: They enforce laws and administer justice. It was not these roles that changed during the National Socialist era, but rather the laws – and it is precisely for this reason that the professional predecessors of our seminar participants not only contributed to the stabilization of the NS dictatorship, they were actively involved in the Holocaust. Many participants in our seminars did not know that police officers shot 600,000 Jews – and yet many returned to duty unpunished by the legal system in the post-war period. In this respect, police officers and lawyers can reflect on past events, their options for action as well as their professional role in the present and the future, which are also shaped by the continuities of their profession.
